IN CHARACTER
Name: Cole
Canon: Dragon Age: Inquisition
Canon Point: Post-Subjected To His Will (human!cole end)
Age: While on the inside he's an ageless spirit, Cole's body has opposing canons. The human Cole was around 12 when he died in the books, but in-game implies he is 20. Let's just say he's a young adult.
History: Wiki link!
Personality:
First things first: Cole isn't human. Not just literally— while that is also true—but in terms of identity, personality, ego, thought patterns, everything. In Dragon Age, spirits are manifestations of things such as faith, wisdom, victory, and live in another realm called the Fade. For Cole, he was originally a manifestation of compassion, brought into the world when the original human Cole died forgotten in the bottom of a dungeon. Spirits are guided solely by fulfilling their natures.
Of course, what compassion means varies from person to person. When he first arrived, Cole's "compassion" was slitting peoples throats to spare them later destined pain. It wasn't malicious or pleasure-derived, he was just a simple being trying to work in a very complex world. However, the mutable nature of concepts such as compassion means Cole is mutable as well. Over the course of the game, he not only develops his understanding of compassion but his own humanity, so much so that a magic item intended to work on spirits does not function properly on him. This is his personal quest and crisis point! You can choose to either encourage him to return to his true nature as a spirit or to grow in his humanity even further. This version of Cole is the latter choice. Meta-wise, his writer has stated that there is no "win" choice in this quest; both have positive and negative aspects.
So! That stated, how about how Cole interacts in his day-to-day?
Strangely, is the answer. Many people still find him a bit unsettling, even after the "human"ing. He stares through others, appears/reappears on a whim, hangs out in odd places, and probably smells. He's also rather blunt, plain about his emotions because he doesn't understand even accepted social deceit. But those who do understand him or seek to, absolutely love him. He's extraordinarily kind and caring even to strangers, or rather, especially to strangers! As a spirit of compassion, his nature revolves around healing the pain of others, something he describes as being able to hear as a song. A really fun mini-quest series is various innocuous eccentricities he does to this end, such as throwing turnips into the fire so that a dying soldier would be reminded of home.
But this empathy ability also shows itself amongst the Inquisitors other companions. Often in party banter, he states the agonies of those around him in the form of snippets of memory. He has also blurted out some Other feelings they are having, much to their embarrassment and consternation. Not surprisingly, the fair majority don't appreciate their hearts being rooted around in, but Cole still hasn't quite learned things like "the appropriate time". But there are a lot of things he hasn't learned or experienced, and post personal-quest with human!ending, he seems tentatively excited to do so. He laughs for literally the only time in-game.
Remember that description of his personal quest? The amulet not working? It all began with his main anxiety: having his nature perverted or twisted into something other than it actually is. Spirits become demons when this happens, compassion would be warped into despair. Cole carries heavy regret for the things he did when he was "new" in the world and constantly worries that something out there will mislead or force him into something contrary to what he wants. He is naive in many aspects, but not when it comes to the manipulations of others. While he is no longer vulnerable as a spirit to being magically bound, he knows there are other things in the world that could do just the same thing.
Really, he's fairly simple. He doesn't have ulterior motives or hidden agendas, he doesn't have any lust for power. All he wants to do— all he is driven to do— is help other as best he can. His approval/disapproval mechanic revolves mainly around whether or not the Inquisitor does their best to help others as well.
Setting: Being from grimdark medieval fantasy means the Savrou setting will be quite a shock at first. Luckily Cole is quite used to not understanding what's going on around him, and I imagine he will adjust just fine. Wherever he is, all that matters is that he can continue to help others, and Thisavrou is definitely in need of that!
Abilities/Skills:
Having gone down the human path, Cole has lost some of his original abilities (mainly being able to make people forget him). His main ability is empathy; he 'hears' the pain of others in the form of a memory song. Human!Cole can no longer hear others as well, as convenient excuse for him to not use the ability all over the place as he did the majority of the game. Because of the whole "not god-moding others", it's something I don't intend to spring on the other players without discussing it with them first! He can also teleport in/out of places at will, not even necessarily needing a line of sight to do so, and also has a form of invisibility,
As for actual game mechanics abilities, Cole is a rogue with the assassin specialization. Basically, killing things quickly in close range with daggers is exactly the thing he excels at! Unfortunately it also means he is a glass cannon and #1 hog of all your health potions.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
+Many people describe characters as a "precious cinnamon roll" but Cole is the actual definition of this term. He's disgustingly benevolent and kind.
-Very physically fragile.
-Awkward and unsettling, will never have a career in customer service let alone as a politician.
Items: Big hat, ratty clothes. And two daggers.

[The camera is dominated by a very odd, very gross hat. It flops down low enough that the recorder's face can't be seen, but the movement suggests that yes, there is a person under there somewhere.]
I have heard that there are people taking in refugees. Not... people refugees. But animals. People seem to think animals can always take care of themselves, but that is not true. It is nice that they are getting help too.
I could help more.

permissions! & ooc inbox & credit
This is a good spot as any to place an ooc inbox, so if you have anything to say... say it here! Questions, comments, whatever, maybe you just feel like chatting, it can all go here. And now, onto the permissions:
fourth-walling&thread-jacking: Talk to me beforehand!
backtagging: Is fine! Feel free to let me know if you want to let it drop or you want to handwave it, it's not a big deal.
abilities: Cole's main ability is a form of empathy. He can experience the most painful memories of those around him as a sort of mix between a flashback and a song. This is entirely used for good, as a spirit of compassion his nature is to try to ease the pain of others. I will never spring it on anybody, but if you're curious about incorporating it, feel free to chat, as I love to RP with it.
violence&intimacy: Cole is not physically affectionate and will have wildly differing reactions to touch depending on who is doing it. He will defend himself if it becomes necessary, but isn't prone to violence. I am fine RPing the span of what those two things could entail!
romance:Would have to be just the right person at just the right moment. It would be very cute and interesting but won't happen easily. Let's talk about it if you're curious!
And here are some credits: navigation image and profile image. I've lost the source for the inbox image, but it's not mine! If you happen to know, please let me know so I can add it.
